Marine fenders are used in the harbor facilities as cushion to absorb in berthing and play a role in making harbor facilities safe. The “Guidelines for The Design of Fender Systems: 2002(hereinafter guidelines)” published by the International Navigation Association Congress (hereinafter PIANC) describes the importance of temperature and velocity factors for designing marine fenders in berthing ships. The velocity dependency of marine fenders can be treated as the temperature dependency even if the marine fender shape is different. Physical rubber property temperature dependency can be substituted for marine fender temperature dependency.

The amount of world trade goes on increasing recently due to globalization. Thus, harbor facilities grow in importance and value because most commodities are deported by marine transport. A marine fender is a rubber protection device that absorbs most of the kinetic energy for use in a marine structure to protect from the damage of contact with a vessel safety.

The “Guidelines for The Design of Fender Systems: 2002” published by PIANC describes the importance of temperature and velocity dependency for designing marine fenders in berthing ship. Temperature and velocity dependency are among the important factors to choose a marine fender size in accordance with Guidelines. Hence, marine fender makers must show and measure these factors exactly.

However, this guideline does not specify the detailed measuring procedure of temperature and velocity factors. The detailed measuring procedure means test facility conditions, test conditions, temperature stabilized condition and so on.

The PIANC guideline for marine fender design specifies that temperature and velocity factors of marine fenders can be obtained individually from the experiment by using either a prototype or a scale model of a marine fender. Moreover, the marine fender maker must show these factors for each rubber grade and shape. For the specification, we had much time to measure these factors in the experiment by using a scale model due to measure exactly. There are two relations regarding the temperature dependency for marine fenders. The first relation is that velocity dependency; for the marine fender can be treated as a part of temperature dependency even if fender shape is different. The second relation is that the temperature factor measuring by rubber physical property can be substituted by a marine fender model.
